The crown is your watch's front door — used daily, exposed to everything, and responsible for both setting and a big share of water resistance. Here's how to pick one and fit its stem so it engages perfectly.
Screw-Down vs Push-Pull Crowns

What Must Match When Buying a Crown
- Thread: the crown's internal thread must match your case's tube (SKX007-class cases use their own standard; aftermarket tubes vary)
- Tube diameter: crown gasket seals against the tube's outer surface
- Style/size: 6.5–8mm class for divers; oversized "fat" crowns look right on big cases but snag
Fitting the Stem: The Skill Nobody Teaches
New movements ship with an uncut or generic stem. Fitting it to your case is simple surgery:
- Screw the crown onto the uncut stem, insert loosely, and measure how much stem needs removing so the crown sits ~0.5mm from the case when fully engaged
- Remove the stem from the movement before cutting (release the stem latch with a pin press while pulling out — never force)
- Cut slightly long with side cutters or a cutting disc, then file the end square and deburr. A burr here chews the movement's keywork
- Test engagement: stem in, crown on — it should thread at least 3–4 full turns without wobble
- If the connection feels loose, a tiny drop of threadlocker on the stem tip secures it; keep adhesive away from the gasket
The Engagement Test Before Closing Up
- Crown winds smoothly through all positions — no grinding at any rotation point
- Date changes crisply at position 1 (outside the danger zone — see our death zone guide)
- Time-set has positive clicks, hands move immediately
- Crown pushes/seats flush with no sideways play
Any gritty feel usually means: stem too long (bottoming out), a burr, or a bent stem from lateral pressure during install.

If threads match and length suits, yes — that's the ideal outcome. Mismatched thread pitch will cross-thread; stop if it doesn't spin freely.
My crown unscrews completely while winding — why?
Insufficient engagement: stem too short or wrong thread. Redo the fitting rather than gluing.
Do aftermarket crowns seal as well as OEM?
