Phillips Corrects Delivery Date Claim After F.P. Journe Issues Statement

Auction house Phillips has walked back and corrected a claim regarding an early pre-production Chronomètre à Résonance watch set to be offered at auction in November. The correction came after F.P. Journe himself published a letter clarifying the actual delivery date of the timepiece.

"We stand corrected thanks to François-Paul Journe," Phillips stated in an Instagram post. "The 'Pre-Production' Chronomètre à Résonance 022/99 to be offered by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo on November 7-8 was not delivered in 1999 as we originally believed. Thanks to F.P. Journe we now know the watch was actually delivered on 8 June, 2000."

The Disputed Timeline

Phillips had originally announced that the consignor and original owner took delivery of the watch with serial number 022/99 in 1999, and suggested it could be one of the first commercially delivered examples of the Résonance. In his letter titled "Correction," Journe clarified the actual timeline:

  • The first Chronomètre à Résonance was delivered on March 10, 2000
  • No. 022/99R was delivered on June 8, 2000—three months later
  • Other examples were delivered elsewhere in the world during those three months
  • Journe is keeping the serial number of the first delivered Résonance confidential

Impact on Auction Estimate

The correction could affect the sale price of the watch, which carries an estimate of CHF 500,000 to CHF 1 million. Earlier this year, another early Résonance example with serial number 007 sold for a record $13.9 million at Phillips in New York, making it the fifth most expensive watch ever sold at auction.

Collectors typically place higher value on watches delivered earlier in a production run, with the first delivered example often considered the most desirable. However, Phillips emphasized that the watch remains one of the earliest known examples:

"The Chronometre à Résonance 022/99, whilst not being the first one delivered, remains the lowest commercially available number at the time (numbers 1-20 with case numbers 01/00-20/00 were reserved for the Souscription pieces), and 021/99 was retained by Journe himself."

The Legacy of the Résonance

The Chronomètre à Résonance represents a groundbreaking concept in watchmaking—combining two movements with separate balances into a single case and bringing them into synchronization. First prototyped in 1998, with commercial Souscription pieces delivered beginning in 2000, the model embodies the ultimate expression of Journe's vision and talent as a watchmaker.

Journe used the correction as an opportunity to address a broader issue: "I am very often dismayed by the untruths I read about us. There are 'experts' who know F.P. Journe better than I do. Yet it is hardly difficult to gather information, to write and tell the truth."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance?

The Résonance is F.P. Journe's signature timepiece, featuring two separate movements with independent balances synchronized within a single case—a revolutionary concept in mechanical watchmaking first introduced in 1998.

Why does the delivery date matter for collectors?

In the collectors' market, earlier examples of a reference often command higher prices. The first commercially delivered piece is typically the most desirable, which is why accurate provenance information is crucial for auction houses and buyers alike.

What makes serial 022/99 special?

Numbers 1-20 were reserved for Souscription pieces with different case numbers. Serial 022/99 is the lowest commercially available number and features shallow caseback engraving and a shiny pink gold dial characteristic of pre-production models.
