Crown Positions: Your Watch's Gears

Pulling the crown to different depths puts your watch in different modes. Most owners use only two positions and never realize the third exists. Here is the full map — plus the midnight trap that breaks dates.

The Three Crown Positions

PositionNameFunction
0 — fully pushed inWindingTurn clockwise to hand-wind the mainspring (automatics and manuals)
1 — pulled one clickDate setTurn to advance the date (and day on day-date models) — "quickset"
2 — pulled to full outTime setHands stop (hacking) or run; turn to set exact time

GTM movements add a fourth trick: on NH34 platforms, position 1 sets the GMT hand independently while local time keeps running — the feature that makes travel adjustments painless. Details in our movement comparison.

The Midnight Danger Zone

Between roughly 9 PM and 3 AM, the date-change mechanism physically engages inside the watch. Forcing the quickset date during this window fights the engagement and can strip teeth:

  • Rule: never quickset the date when the hands show 9–3
  • If unsure of AM/PM: advance the time past 12 until the date flips — that flip marks midnight; set hands accordingly, then quickset freely outside the window

Setting a Stopped Watch Correctly

  1. Pull crown to position 2 (hands stop — hacking engaged)
  2. Advance hands forward past midnight until the date changes; continue to correct time
  3. Push to position 1 and quickset today's date (safe now that you know where midnight sits)
  4. Push fully in — seconds restart in sync with the reference clock

Always move hands forward, not backward — reverse movement through midnight strains the same mechanism. More daily-handling rules live in our maintenance guide.

Day-Date Owners: Extra Patience Required

Day-date models like our 8285 dial builds (see the dial guide) cycle day and date separately. Catching up months takes a while — quickset the day first, then the date, staying out of the midnight window throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

My date flips at noon instead of midnight?
The watch is showing PM when you think it's AM. Advance 12 hours — classic and harmless fix.

Is winding in position 0 harmful?
No — wind gently until resistance, then stop. Automatics protect against overwinding by design.

Why did my seconds hand freeze when setting time?
Hacking seconds working correctly — the balance halts so you can sync to a reference exactly.
