Magnetized Watches: Symptoms, Testing and Demagnetizing
Suddenly gaining 30+ seconds a day? Before blaming the movement, check the most common and cheapest-to-fix culprit: magnetization. Speakers, laptop coolers, magnetic clasps on bags, phone cases — modern life is full of magnets, and hairsprings hate them.
Why Magnetism Speeds Watches Up
The hairspring is a fine steel alloy coil. When magnetized, its coils attract each other, effectively shortening the spring — which makes the balance oscillate faster. Faster oscillation = the watch runs fast. The classic signature:
- Runs dramatically fast (tens of seconds to minutes per day), often inconsistently
- Rate changes by position more than usual
- Started after contact with a new bag clasp, speaker, magnetic tool tray, or laptop
Testing Without Instruments
- Compare against a known-good reference for 24h to confirm the fast rate
- The compass test: a demagnetized watch doesn't deflect a compass needle held near it. If your watch swings a compass, it's magnetized

Demagnetizing: The Two-Minute Fix
- Get a demaagnetizer ($10–20) — a simple coil you plug in
- Press and hold the button; slowly pass the movement only (or whole watch if you can't open yet) through the coil from front to back
- Slowly withdraw at least 10cm away before releasing the button. Releasing while inside leaves it worse than before
- Repeat once or twice if rate stays high
- Re-measure over 24h — expect return to your previous regulated rate
Prevention Beats Cure
- Magnetic clasps on iPad cases, handbags and fitness bands are the usual repeat offenders — store watches apart
- Some builds use anti-magnetic parts or soft-iron shielding; aftermarket mod parts generally don't, so treat exposure as real risk
- If a watch repeatedly re-magnetizes in your environment, find the source: sweep suspect items with the compass
