How to Set the NH34 GMT: Two Time Zones, One Crown
The NH34 is the only Seiko NH movement with a true GMT hand — and its setting logic confuses everyone on day one. Once you understand that the hour hand jumps independently, it clicks forever. Here's the full procedure.
The Core Concept
The NH34 runs two independent time displays:
- GMT hand (24-hour): rotates once per 24 hours, set to your "home" or reference time. It moves only via the crown's date-position slot
- Local hour hand: jumps in one-hour increments, independently of everything else, for setting local time in any timezone
- Minute and second hands: shared by both displays, set normally
This is a "flyer-style" GMT: travel and the local hour jumps; home time (the GMT hand) stays put.
Crown Positions

Initial Setup, Step by Step
- Wind and start the watch so the second hand is running
- Pull to position 2 and set minute + hour to your current local time
- Pull to position 1. Rotate until the date shows today AND the GMT hand points to your home-time hour on the 24-hour scale (remember: 2pm = 14 on a true 24h bezel/dial). Mind AM/PM — set the GMT hand using 24-hour logic or your date will flip at noon
- Push the crown in. Done — GMT hand now tracks home time permanently
Changing Timezones Later (The Payoff)
- Pull crown to position 2
- Turn the crown until the hour hand jumps to the new local hour (each click = one hour)
- Adjust minutes only if offset from a whole hour (e.g. India's :30 zones)
- Push crown in. Your GMT hand still reads home time; the date follows the local hour hand
