The Case Is the Foundation
Every other component — dial, hands, crystal, movement — lives inside the case. Case design determines water resistance, wrist comfort and visual character. Here are the main case construction types.
Monobloc (Single-Piece)
The case is machined from a single block of metal. No separate caseback — the movement loads from the front through the crystal opening. Extremely robust.
- Advantage: maximum water resistance — no caseback gasket to fail
- Disadvantage: movement servicing requires crystal removal
Three-Piece
The most common construction: case middle, caseback and bezel as separate pieces. The movement loads through the caseback.
- Advantage: easy servicing — remove caseback, access movement
- Advantage: flexible — different casebacks (solid vs exhibition) on same case middle
Sandwich
Two-piece case where the dial sits between a lower plate and an upper ring. The crystal presses into the upper ring. Common in military-inspired designs.
- Advantage: dial depth and lume layering
Why Construction Matters
Construction determines: how easily the watch can be serviced, how well it seals against water, and how thick or thin the final profile can be. A three-piece case is the practical standard; monobloc is for specialized tool watches.
