Most buyers compare crystal materials — sapphire versus mineral (our comparison here). Far fewer notice crystal shape, yet shape changes reflections, distortion, vintage character and even perceived case thickness. Meet the four profiles.
Flat Crystal
The modern default: a flat pane sitting flush or slightly above the bezel.
- Strengths: cheapest to replace, easiest to seal, zero optical distortion
- Character: contemporary, tool-watch honesty
- Found on: most of our sports line, e.g. the Black Sub NH35
Box Crystal
Tall sides rising vertically before curving inward — the 1970s diver signature.
- Strengths: instant vintage presence; magnifies the dial slightly like a porthole
- Trade-off: catches more reflections; taller profile adds height
- Found on: retro builds like the Vintage Sub NH35
Domed / Double-Domed Crystal
A gentle continuous curve; "double-domed" curves upward and underneath at the edge so the rim nearly disappears.
- Strengths: light flows across the dial with almost no reflection break; makes cases look thinner
- Trade-off: highest cost; edge distortion when viewed at extreme angles is normal physics

AR Coating: The Invisible Upgrade
Anti-reflective treatment — a microscopically thin layer that cancels reflected light:
- Single-side AR (underside): standard on quality watches; scratch-proof placement where fingers never touch
- Double-side AR: maximum clarity but outer coatings can fine-scratch over years
- Test in person: tilt the watch — AR-coated crystals show a faint blue tint and let dial color punch through instead of mirroring your face

Do domed crystals scratch more easily?
Shape does not change hardness — a domed sapphire resists scratches identically to flat sapphire.
Why does my flat crystal reflect so much?
No AR coating. It is cosmetic, not quality loss — but noticeable in photos.
Can crystal shapes be swapped?
Only within matching case openings — crystal diameter, height and gasket seating are case-specific. Check case listings for specs.
