The most misunderstood number on any watch spec sheet is water resistance. A "5ATM" marking does not mean you can dive to 50 meters. Here is what the ratings actually mean — and which one fits your lifestyle.
What the Ratings Really Mean

The ratings reflect static pressure lab tests. Moving your arm through water multiplies effective pressure enormously — that is why 50m watches fail while swimming.
What Kills Water Resistance
- Heat: hot showers and saunas expand and deform gaskets permanently
- Age: rubber gaskets dry and shrink; test every 1–2 years if you swim often
- Unscrewed crowns: a screw-down crown left loose is an open door
- Impacts: a knock can shift the case back enough to break the seal
Crown Position Matters
Never operate the crown or pushers underwater unless the spec explicitly allows it. Pulling a crown mid-swim bypasses the entire sealing system.
Condensation Warning Signs
If you see fog under the crystal that clears slowly:
- Stop wearing the watch in water immediately
- Do NOT put it on a radiator or in rice — heat warps gaskets further
- Open the case back and let it dry fully, then replace gaskets before any water use again
