Two Ways to Wind
Every mechanical watch needs energy. How that energy gets into the mainspring depends on the movement type — and understanding the difference prevents damage.
Automatic (Self-Winding)
An oscillating weight (rotor) spins with your wrist movement, winding the mainspring through a reduction gear train. Daily wear keeps it running. The rotor disengages automatically when fully wound — no overwinding risk.
- Best for: daily wearers — wear it, forget it, it stays wound
- If it stops: give 10-15 gentle hand-winds, then wear for an hour to top up
Manual (Hand-Wound)
You wind the crown directly, which turns the mainspring barrel. Each full wind gives 40-80 hours of power (depending on the movement). No rotor means thinner cases — the dress-watch advantage.
- Best for: dress watches, collection rotation, people who enjoy the ritual
- Technique: turn crown clockwise gently until resistance, then stop — never force past resistance
Hybrid: Hand-Wind + Automatic
Most modern automatics (including all NH35/NH34 movements) also support hand-winding. Best of both worlds: wind by hand when first putting on, rotor takes over from there.
