Winders: Direction and TPD for NH Movements
Which Direction to Wind?
If you own a watch winder, the rotation direction setting matters more than most people realize.
NH35/NH34 Winding Direction
Seiko NH-family movements wind bidirectionally — the rotor charges the mainspring rotating both clockwise and counterclockwise. This makes them forgiving:
- Clockwise: works
- Counterclockwise: works
- Bidirectional: ideal — most efficient charging
TPD Settings for NH Movements
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Turns per day | 650–800 TPD |
| Direction | Bidirectional preferred |
| Rest cycles | Programs with sleep pauses mimic wrist wear best |
Overspin Worry
Don't stress — modern automatics have a slipping bridle that disengages at full wind. A winder cannot overwind an NH35. The real question is whether constant running is necessary at all — our verdict is usually no (see the winder guide).
Frequently Asked Questions
My manual says "clockwise only" — different movement?
Yes — some brands wind one-way only. Always check your specific caliber; NH family is bidirectional.
Can I overwork the rotor?
24/7 winding adds bearing wear for zero benefit. Winders with rest intervals are kinder — or simply wear the watch.
