Broken Stems Inside Movements

A stem snapped inside the movement seems catastrophic but is recoverable. Here is the extraction approach.

Why Stems Snap

  • Forcing stuck crowns (see our extraction guide)
  • Bending fatigue from misaligned reinstallation attempts
  • Manufacturing defects occasionally — rare but real

Assessment First

  1. Open the case and remove the movement per standard procedure
  2. Locate the broken stem section remaining inside the keyless works
  3. Determine: is the broken piece protruding enough to grip, or fully recessed?

Extraction Methods

  • Fragment protruding even slightly
  • Flush or recessed fragment
  • No success with above
  • SituationApproach
Fine tweezers grip and withdraw gently
Stem extractor tools exist; or a heated needle carefully pressed into the hollow stem end creates grip
Watchmaker extraction — they have micro-extractors and the experience to avoid keyless damage

    After Successful Extraction

    • Inspect keyless works for collateral damage — the setting lever is vulnerable during stem breaks
    • Test all crown positions before ordering replacements
    • New stem cut to length per our measuring guide

Stem mechanics explained in our connection guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Prevention better than cure?
Absolutely — never force crowns, always press release buttons before removal, align threads before tightening.
