Measuring Stems Right
Crown stems must be cut to exact length — too short means a falling crown; too long means a movement that won't seat. Here is the measuring technique.
The Measurement Method
- Remove the old stem if replacing — it's your template
- Measure total length: from threaded tip to the squared end that engages the movement
- If no old stem exists: insert the new uncut stem into the movement, install the case back loosely, mark where the crown threads begin on the protruding stem, then remove and add 1–2mm for thread engagement
The Cutting Process
- Use fine cutters or a Dremel with cutting disc — clean cuts prevent threading damage
- Cut 1mm long initially; test fit; trim gradually
- Deburr the cut end with fine file so it slides into the movement smoothly
