The Chapter Ring: Small Part, Big Difference
It's the thin ring sitting between your dial and crystal, printed with minute markers — and it's the part most first-time builders forget to order. A missing or wrong chapter ring makes a build look unfinished; the right one ties dial, hands and bezel together.
What a Chapter Ring Does
- Carries minute/second markers: keeps your dial clean while preserving full timekeeping reference
- Fills the gap: bridges the space between dial edge and case wall so no dark gap shows around the dial
- Hides the movement ring: covers what would otherwise be visible machining at the dial's edge
Some dials have markers printed directly on them and skip the chapter ring entirely — that's a style choice, not a rule. But on SKX007-style builds where the dial is minimal, the chapter ring is doing half the visual work.

OEM rings are plastic; aftermarket versions come in aluminum and steel with finishes from brushed silver to black PVD to two-tone kanji prints.
Choosing Style
- Minimal numerals: clean 5-minute marks — safest match for busy dials
- Full 1–12 or 1–60 numerals: vintage dive character, pairs well with sparse dials
- Kanji day-wheel style: Japanese-market flavor; popular with NH36 day-date builds
- Colored/two-tone: use sparingly — the ring should support the dial, not compete with it
Installation Notes
- The ring drops into the case before the dial goes in — it sits in its own ledge inside the case mouth
- Orientation matters only for split-color designs (e.g. red 0–20 zone); line it up with your dial's features before the dial presses against it
- No adhesive needed — the dial and movement sandwich it in place
- If the ring sits proud and blocks the dial, check you don't have a bezel-side ring mixed up with the case-side one
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run no chapter ring at all?
You can, but you'll see a gap between dial edge and case wall on most SKX-pattern cases. Some builders black-out the gap with a matte ring instead of a marked one.
Do chapter rings fit across case brands?
Rings made for SKX007/SRPD cases are interchangeable between those cases, but not with Turtle, Samurai or Sumo layouts — each platform has its own diameter.
Does it affect water resistance?
Indirectly — it doesn't seal anything, but it must sit flush so the crystal gasket and bezel seat properly above it.
