A chronograph adds stopwatch functionality to normal timekeeping — one of the most useful and visually dramatic complications. But not all chronographs are created equal. Here are the types and what distinguishes them.
Column Wheel vs Cam-Actuated
The two main mechanisms that control chronograph start/stop/reset:
- Column wheel: a precisely machined wheel with columns that controls the chronograph lever. Smoother pusher feel, more expensive to produce, considered the premium mechanism
- Cam-actuated: uses a simpler cam lever system. Reliable, cheaper, slightly stiffer pusher feel. Most affordable chronographs use this
In practice, both keep time accurately. Column wheel is about feel and craftsmanship; cam is about value.
Flyback Chronograph
Standard chronographs require three actions: stop, reset, start. A flyback resets and restarts with a single push — essential for pilots timing consecutive navigation legs. The convenience is genuine even for non-pilots: timing a second event without stopping the first.
Split-Seconds (Rattrapante)
The most complex chronograph variant: two seconds hands that can be separated to time two events simultaneously, then re-synced. Visually spectacular, mechanically demanding, and priced accordingly.
Mecha-Quartz
