What a Tourbillon Is
Invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801, a tourbillon mounts the entire escapement — balance wheel, hairspring, pallet fork — inside a rotating cage. The cage completes one full revolution per minute, averaging out positional errors caused by gravity.
The original problem it solved: pocket watches spent hours each day in the same vertical position (face up in a waistcoat pocket). Gravity pulled the balance wheel unevenly, hurting accuracy. Spinning the escapement through all positions neutralized the bias.
Does It Matter on a Wrist?
Here is the honest part. A wristwatch changes position constantly throughout the day — it is already averaging out gravity effects naturally. A tourbillon on the wrist adds engineering beauty and visual theatre, but its accuracy benefit over a well-regulated non-tourbillon movement is marginal at best.
That does not make it worthless. It makes it art.
