Insert Adhesives Decoded
Bezel insert adhesives are not all equal. Here is what to use and what to avoid.
Adhesive Options
| Adhesive | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-cut adhesive rings | Precise, clean, no mess | Single-use; specific sizes needed |
| Double-sided tape (3M) | Cheap, available everywhere | May extend beyond insert edge, messy |
| UV-cure adhesive | Controlled cure timing — reposition before UV light | Requires UV lamp; not removable |
| Watch-specific cement | Non-gassing — prevents crystal fogging later | Specific product, not everywhere |
The Non-Gassing Rule
Adhesives that release gas (many craft glues) deposit microscopic vapor inside the sealed case, fogging the crystal within weeks. Always use watch-specific or UV-cure adhesives for any work inside a sealed case.
Curing Best Practices
- Even pressure while curing — clamp with a light weight, not heavy compression
- Room temperature cure — cold slows bonding, heat risks expansion
- Full 24-hour cure before wearing — even "quick-set" adhesives benefit from patience
Insert alignment once adhesive is applied in our alignment guide; swap procedure in the replacement guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse old adhesive?
Never — it loses tack completely and causes misalignment.
