NH35 vs NH36 vs NH34: Which Movement for Your Build

One Family, Three Personalities

Most mods run on the NH family, and beginners ask the same question: which one do I actually need? The good news is the NH35, NH36 and NH34 share the same case footprint, so a case built for one usually takes all three. The differences are complications, clearance and price. Here is the honest comparison.

Accuracy behavior is similar across the family — expect typical daily rates around ±20 seconds until regulated. Our NH35 vs 4R35 article covers the factory alternative.

Which One Should You Build With?

  • First build, date only: NH35. Cheapest, most compatible, endless dial choice
  • Day-date look (classic SKX/Seiko 5): NH36. The day wheel is the only real difference — and it is worth it if you want that classic layout
  • GMT build (Pepsi/Batman style): NH34. Requires a GMT case with clearance for the taller hand stack — not every case accepts it
  • No date at all (sterile/minimal): NH38 — date-less dials look cleaner

The NH34 Gotcha

The GMT hand stack sits higher, so an NH34 needs a case with enough internal clearance and a dial with a GMT hand hole. Ordering an NH34 into a case that was never designed for GMT is a classic compatibility trap — the hands will bind or press against the crystal. Confirm the case listing explicitly says NH34/GMT compatible.

Skeleton builds use a different family entirely — the NH70/NH71/NH72 with 30.8mm dials, covered in our skeleton movement guide.

Before You Order

  1. Pick the complication you actually wear (date? day-date? GMT?)
  2. Confirm the case says the movement name, not just "NH compatible"
  3. For GMT: verify explicit NH34 clearance
  4. Order dial, hands and movement as a matched set from one source when possible

Compatibility beyond the movement: full pre-order checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NH36 more accurate than NH35?
No — same architecture, similar factory tolerances. Regulation decides.

Can I swap an NH36 dial onto an NH35?
Only with an NH36 movement — the day-date dial needs the day wheel underneath.

Why is the NH34 more expensive?
Fewer are made and GMT demand is high; the extra hand stack also costs more to produce.
