The #1 Reason Mods Fail: Incompatible Parts

Ask any Seiko mod community and the answer is the same: the most common build-killer is not a broken tool — it is ordering parts that do not fit together. A dial arrives and it is 30.8mm, but your case opening was made for 28.5mm. A hand set is beautiful but the holes are wrong for your movement. The crown sits at 3.8 o'clock but your case is drilled for 3. The watch never gets built. Use this checklist before every order and most of those problems disappear.

Step 1: Lock Your Movement First

The movement dictates everything downstream. Decide the caliber before touching the shopping cart.

• NH35 — date only, 28.5mm dials, 3.8 crown position by default
• NH36 — day-date, 28.5mm dials, same footprint as NH35
• NH34 — GMT fourth hand, needs extra hand-stack clearance in the case
• NH38 — no date, sterile builds, 28.5mm dials
• NH70/NH71/NH72 — skeleton/open-heart family, 30.8mm dials only

Step 2: Dial Size — The Most Common Mistake

A 28.5mm dial in a 30.8mm case opening floats; a 30.8mm dial will not physically seat in a 28.5mm case. This single error is the reason so many first builds stall for weeks. Step 3: Dial Feet and Date Window

• Dial feet must align with the movement's slots. NH35 dials place feet for a 3.8 crown; NH38 dials place them differently
• Date window position must match the movement's date disc. An NH36 day-date dial does not work on an NH35 date-only build
• Some dials ship with four feet — remove the two your movement does not need, before installing
• Feet bent or broken? Dial dots or adhesive pads are the standard rescue

Step 4: Hands — Size and Height

Hand hole diameters are caliber-specific. NH35/NH36 use a 0.9mm hour hand, 1.20mm minute hand, 0.20mm seconds hand. VK63 hands have different post sizes entirely, and skeleton-family hands differ again. A hand that fits the movement may still hit the crystal if the hand stack is too tall — check the case's stated clearance before buying extra-tall hands. Step 5: Crown Position and Stem

• Confirm the case's crown position: 3 o'clock and 3.8 o'clock cases are not interchangeable
• Cases marked "NH35" usually fit the full NH35/36/38 family, but verify the crown hole matches your movement's stem height
• Stems ship too long and are cut to fit — see stem measuring before you cut

Step 6: Bezel, Crystal, Chapter Ring

• Bezel inserts come in specific diameters per case model — an SKX007 insert fits SKX-style cases only
• Crystal diameter and gasket size must match the case's crystal seat — measure, don't guess (gasket sizing)
• Chapter rings are case-specific: diameter, marker position and color all vary between case models

2. Case dial diameter matches movement (28.5mm or 30.8mm)
3. Dial feet position matches crown position
4. Date window matches movement complication

7. Stems, gaskets and spring bars included or ordered
