Two-Tone Surfaces: The Polishing Discipline

Polishing Mixed Finishes

Most modern watches combine brushed and polished surfaces. Polishing them wrong destroys the design. Here is the discipline.

The Golden Rule: Tape First

Before touching any polish compound, mask one finish type with painter's tape. You cannot accidentally brush a polished surface if tape covers it — and vice versa.

Grain Direction Discipline

Brushed finishes have a direction — usually horizontal across the case. New scratches running against the grain glare visibly. Always identify the existing direction first (light raked across the surface reveals it), then match it exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transition line got blurry — recoverable?
Yes: re-tape a crisp line along the transition, re-brush the brushed side cleanly, then re-polish up to the tape edge.
