Most modern watches combine brushed and polished surfaces. Polishing them wrong destroys the design. Here is the discipline.
The Golden Rule: Tape First
Before touching any polish compound, mask one finish type with painter's tape. You cannot accidentally brush a polished surface if tape covers it — and vice versa.

Grain Direction Discipline
Brushed finishes have a direction — usually horizontal across the case. New scratches running against the grain glare visibly. Always identify the existing direction first (light raked across the surface reveals it), then match it exactly.
