The case is the biggest mass of any build — its material decides weight, scratch behavior and how the watch ages. Its finish decides how light plays across it. Here's what each option actually delivers.

- Titanium: the comfort pick for big cases. Grade 5 (alloyed) is harder and brighter than Grade 2 (commercially pure, softer, warmer-toned). Scratches self-smooth into an even sheen over months
- Bronze: a living finish — salt air, sweat and time grow a patina unique to you. Can be reset to shine with vinegar or kept weathered deliberately. Requires accepting change as the point
Finishes Over Steel/Brass
- Brushed vs polished zones: classic tool watches mix both — brushed tops, polished chamfers catch light lines. All-brushed hides daily scratches best; all-polished shows everything
- PVD black: physical vapor deposition bonds a hard dark layer. Quality PVD wears slowly at high-contact points (clasp, crown edge); cheap versions chip visibly
- DLC: diamond-like carbon — harder than standard PVD, the premium stealth option
- Cerakote: ceramic-polymer coating in unlimited colors; thinner and color-rich but softer than PVD — best for accent builds, expected to scuff characterfully

Can scratched PVD be repaired?
Not spot-repaired — recoating means full strip and re-process. Treat quality PVD as durable but not invincible.
Bronze turning my wrist green?
Copper oxide can transfer with heavy sweat; it washes off and isn't harmful. A clear lacquer coat prevents it at the cost of stopping patina.
Does material affect water resistance?
