Essential Tools (Must Have)
1. Spring Bar Tool
A spring bar tool is used to remove and install spring bars — the tiny pins that hold your strap or bracelet to the watch case. You will use this tool every time you change a strap.
What to look for: A double-ended tool with a fork on one end and a pin on the other. The fork end is for compressing spring bars, the pin end is for drilled lugs.
2. Case Back Opener
To access the movement inside your watch, you need to remove the case back. A case back opener grips the notches on the case back and unscrews it.
What to look for: A Jaxa-style adjustable wrench fits most case backs. For Seiko-style case backs, a simple 3-prong opener works well.
3. Hand Press Tool
To install or remove watch hands, you need a hand press tool. This tool pushes the hands onto the movement posts with even pressure, avoiding damage.
What to look for: A vertical hand press with multiple die sizes. The dies should fit NH35 and NH34 movement posts (0.9mm and 1.2mm).
4. Tweezers
Fine-tipped tweezers are essential for handling small parts like hands, gaskets, and screws. Anti-magnetic tweezers are preferred to avoid magnetizing the movement.
5. Movement Holder
A movement holder keeps the movement stable while you work on it. It prevents the movement from sliding around and protects the rotor.
For NH35 and NH34 movements, use a holder sized for the 7S26/NH35 family.
Nice to Have (But Not Required)
6. Loupe or Magnifying Glass
A watchmaker loupe (10x magnification) helps you see tiny details like hand alignment and gasket seating. Not required, but very helpful for precision work.
7. Screwdriver Set
A set of precision screwdrivers (0.6mm to 2.0mm) is useful for removing crown stems and adjusting movement components. Most beginners will not need these until they start doing movement swaps.
8. Rodico Cleaning Putty
Rodico is a green putty used to clean oil, fingerprints, and debris from watch parts. It is a favorite among professional watchmakers. Not essential for beginners, but nice to have.
9. Dust Blower
A small rubber dust blower removes dust and lint from the dial and crystal before closing the case. A single speck of dust inside the crystal is very noticeable.
What You Do NOT Need
- Timing machine — This is for professional regulation, not needed for basic modding
- Pressure testing equipment — Water resistance testing requires expensive gear; leave this to professionals
- Lubrication kit — Unless you are servicing the movement itself, you do not need to oil anything
- Winding machine — Automatic movements wind themselves when worn
