Every mechanical watch drifts. Regulation is the process of adjusting that drift to acceptable levels — typically within manufacturer spec. Here is how it works, what tools are involved, and whether you should attempt it yourself.
How Regulation Works
Inside every mechanical movement, the balance wheel oscillates back and forth at a fixed rate. Regulation adjusts the effective length of the hairspring — the tiny spiral spring attached to the balance wheel:
- Shorter effective length: balance swings faster → watch gains time
- Longer effective length: balance swings slower → watch loses time
The regulator lever on most movements moves the hairspring's fixed point, achieving this length change. It is a tiny adjustment — a fraction of a millimeter changes seconds per day.
Positional Variance
A watch rates differently depending on which way it faces. This is normal physics — gravity affects the balance wheel differently in each position. A well-regulated watch is adjusted across five positions:
- Dial up, dial down
- Crown up, crown down, crown left
The goal is not perfect accuracy in every position — it is consistent performance across the positions you actually wear.
What You Need to Regulate
- Timegrapher: a microphone that listens to the balance wheel's tick and displays rate, amplitude and beat error graphically
- Regulator tool: a fine lever or screwdriver to move the regulator
- Patience: adjustments are iterative — move, retest, move again
