COSC: The Testing Body
The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres is an independent Swiss institute that tests watch movements for accuracy. Each movement is tested individually over 15 days in five positions and three temperatures:
- Position: dial up, dial down, crown up, crown down, crown left
- Temperatures: 8°C, 23°C, 38°C
- Result: daily rate must stay within -4/+6 seconds per day across all conditions
About 3% of Swiss movements fail the test. Those that pass receive the "Chronometer" designation.
What It Actually Guarantees
- Accuracy: -4/+6 sec/day in tested positions — better than standard spec but not atomic
- Quality control: each movement individually tested, not batch-sampled
- Nothing else: COSC does not test water resistance, durability, power reserve, or finishing
