The Lume Family
- Radium: radioactive, used until the 1960s. Effective but dangerous — original radium dials are collector items but should not be serviced carelessly
- Tritium: radioactive but far less dangerous than radium. Self-powered glow that fades over 10-12 years. Used in military watches through the 1990s
- Super-LumiNova: non-radioactive, charges from light, emits glow for hours. The industry standard today — available in multiple colors
- Lumibrite: Seiko's proprietary lume — similar performance to Super-LumiNova, often brighter initially
- Chromalight: Rolex's proprietary blue-glowing lume — longer-lasting than standard Super-LumiNova
How Lume Works
Modern lume (Super-LumiNova and derivatives) is a strontium aluminate compound. It absorbs UV light (sunlight, lamp light) and re-emits it as visible light. No radioactivity, no batteries, no expiration — it charges and glows indefinitely.
