Every first build follows the same arc: excitement at the box of parts, then a quiet panic when a hand bends or a stem is suddenly too short. The community's hard-won lesson is simple — most failures are sequencing failures. Work in the right order and the common disasters mostly disappear.
Phase 0: Before Parts Arrive
- Run the compatibility checklist before checkout — the number one stall point
- Clean your workspace: dust-free surface, good light, no fans, no fabric nearby

Phase 1: The Movement Bench
- Mount the movement in the holder — never freehand it
- Inspect the movement: check the balance wheel spins, set the date forward to confirm the calendar works
- Fit the dial — align dial feet, press gently. If it resists, stop and check the feet, never force

Phase 2: Hands — The Delicate Stage
- Pull the crown to hack the movement (seconds stop)
- Hour hand first, aligned to 12; then minute hand at 12; seconds hand last
- Press gently with the correct size tool — force bends posts and hands
- Rotate the hands through a full 12-hour cycle and check nothing touches
- Seconds hand not seating? Lift and retry; two or three attempts is normal

Phase 3: Casing
- Insert the movement into the case from the caseback side, stem aligned with the crown tube
- Cut the stem progressively — 0.5mm at a time, test fitting each time. Too long can be shortened; too short cannot be fixed (stem cutting)
- Fit the chapter ring before final seating, check alignment at 12/3/6/9
- Install crystal and bezel with even pressure — uneven pressing cracks crystals and pinches gaskets
Phase 4: Closing and Testing
- Check the caseback gasket is seated evenly and greased — see sealing protocol
- Blow dust off dial and crystal before closing — a single speck is visible forever
- Close the caseback firmly, not violently — the gasket seals, not the torque
- Function test: wind, set time, cycle the date, let it run
