What is the Seiko NH35 movement?
If you have been looking at affordable automatic watches, you have seen the name Seiko NH35. It shows up in product specs, builder forums, and most custom dive watches under $300. The full name is Seiko Caliber NH35A. It is a 24-jewel, self-winding mechanical movement made by Seiko Instruments (SII) and sold through Time Module (TMI).
The NH35 is the unbranded OEM version of Seiko’s own 4R35. Same architecture, same parts family. 4R35 goes into Seiko-branded watches. NH35 is sold to independent makers. That is why Funny Items uses it in our Sub Diver, Dress, and Vintage Bronze lines: Japanese automatic DNA, easy to service, and enough budget left for a better case, crystal, and dial.
It winds from wrist motion. No battery. Wear it, it runs. Leave it off for two days, wind the crown and it starts again.
From the 7S26 to the NH35
For years the budget standard was the Seiko 7S26 — the movement inside the old SKX007 and countless Seiko 5s. Tough and cheap, but no manual winding and no hacking seconds. You could not stop the seconds hand to set time exactly, and a dead watch meant shaking it like a snow globe.
The 4R35 family fixed both. The NH35 is the third-party version of that upgrade. Independent brands finally got Seiko mechanics with hacking, hand-winding, and a wholesale cost that still works on a $199–$259 watch.
That is why the NH35 became the default engine for custom automatics and the parts-modding scene. Same footprint as the old 7S26 family, so dials, hands, and cases stay interchangeable. We sell those parts too: dials, cases, hands, and straps.

Features that actually matter on the wrist
Hacking seconds
Pull the crown to the time-setting position and the seconds hand stops. Sync to a phone or radio clock, push the crown in on the beep. The old 7S26 could not do this. Once you have used hacking, you will not go back.
Manual winding
The NH35 winds itself, but you can also wind it by turning the crown clockwise while it is pushed in. Take the watch off Friday night, pick it up Sunday, give it 20–30 turns, done. No shaking.
Magic Lever
Seiko’s Magic Lever converts rotor motion from both directions into mainspring wind. Efficient, simple, and one reason these movements last.
Diashock
The balance staff sits in a shock-absorbing setting. That is why NH35 is the usual pick for tool and dive-style cases — it survives daily knocks better than its price suggests.
41-hour power reserve
A full wind lasts about 41 hours. Weekday daily wear is easy. A weekend on the nightstand is usually fine. Longer than that, hand-wind it.
How accurate is the NH35?
Factory spec is −20 to +40 seconds per day. That window looks wide on paper. In real use, most examples settle around ±10 to 15 seconds/day. A well-regulated piece can sit in single digits.
The Seiko-branded 4R35 is often listed at −15 to +25 seconds/day. That is tighter factory regulation, not a different movement. Same parts. COSC chronometers run −4 to +6 seconds/day and cost several times more. The NH35 is not trying to be that. It is trying to be a daily automatic you can service anywhere.
Position, temperature, and how fully it is wound all change the rate. If your watch gains or loses more than about 20 seconds a day after a week of wear, it can be regulated. Almost any watchmaker who handles Japanese automatics can do it.
NH35 vs other movements we actually use
NH35 vs NH34 (GMT)
The NH34 sits on the same platform and adds a true GMT: an independently settable 24-hour hand for a second time zone. Same service ecosystem, thicker complication, higher price. We put NH34 in the GMT collection — Pepsi NH34, Batman NH34, Light Blue NH34, and the Meteorite NH34. If you only need local time and a date, stay on NH35 and save the money.
NH35 vs NH36
NH36 is NH35 plus a day-of-week disc. Same size, same jewels, same reserve. Choose it only if the dial has a day window. Our core divers and dress pieces use date-only NH35 for a cleaner look.
NH35 vs 4R35
Mechanically the same calibre. 4R35 is Seiko-branded. NH35 is OEM. Longevity and parts are the same. Do not pay a premium just for the 4R stamp if the rest of the watch is weaker.
NH35 vs Miyota 8215
Closest rival at this price. Similar beat rate and reserve. Base 8215 usually has no hacking and no hand-winding. That is why we default to NH35 for automatics. Miyota still makes sense in quartz and some dress layouts; it is not our automatic standard.
NH35 vs DD 8285
Some dress models use the DD 8285, including the Full Gold DD 8285. Different look, day-date window, lower price. For a tool diver or a watch you want serviced in 10 years, NH35 is the safer long-term choice.
NH35 vs Swiss ETA 2824-2
ETA 2824-2 typically runs tighter (−7 to +13 s/d) at 28,800 vph. It also costs enough to push a finished watch well above our range. NH35 gives most of the daily experience at a fraction of the movement cost, which is why it owns the sub-$300 automatic market.
