Hands Are the Personality You Read Every Minute

Communities say it plainly: "wrong hands on the right dial is the most common reason a mod falls short." Hands are small, cheap and swappable — but they are also the most delicate part of the build and the easiest to get wrong twice (once in ordering, once in installation).

Sizing: The Numbers That Must Match

  • Hole sizes — NH35/36/38: hour 0.9mm, minute 1.20mm, seconds 0.20mm. VK quartz chronos differ; skeleton family differs again. Match the movement, not the look
  • Length — minute and hour hands must reach their track; too-short hands float aimlessly. Check the dial's marker radius
  • Height — hand stacks are graded by height; too-tall hands hit the crystal, too-short hands drag on the dial. Clearance guidance in compatibility checklist

Finish and Lume Matching

  • Match metal finish to the dial markers: brushed dial wants brushed hands, polished dial wants polished
  • Match lume color and tone: C3 (green) hands on C3 dial, BGW9 (blue) on blue — mismatched lume looks broken at night (lume colors)
  • Match lume application style: applied plots want lumed hands; printed dials tolerate plain

Installation Without Tears

  1. Hour hand first at 12, then minute at 12, seconds last — build order
  2. Use a hand presser sized to each hand; force bends posts (toolkit)
  3. Rotate a full 12-hour cycle before the seconds hand goes on
  4. Lift and retry rather than forcing — two or three attempts is normal (pressing technique)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix hand brands?
Yes, if hole sizes match the movement — style mixing is how signature looks happen.

Why do seconds hands stop the watch?
They are touching something — the dial, a marker or another hand. Reseat with clearance.

Are cheap hand sets worth it?
For a first practice build, yes. For the watch you will actually wear, spend the few extra dollars — finish and lume quality differ visibly.
